Sharp and Xerox Toner Cartridges Model ZT-50TD1
DOC-0170
These instructions cover the recharging of the Sharp ZT-50TD1 toner
cartridge used in the Sharp Z-50,70,and 80 series, (Part # ZT-50TD1), Xerox
5008 (Part # 6R343), Xerox 5009 (part # 6R359).
The purpose of this recharge procedure is to remove old and add new
developer and toner into the toner cartridge. This is a fairly simple
process since the toner cartridge has two fill holes located directly
under the clear cover on the side of the cartridge. The small hole
is for developer and the larger hole for toner. Caution: If you do
not have the original seal, this cartridge can not be shipped after
recharge since the toner and developer will spill during shipping.
If the cartridge must be shipped, a replacement seal must be purchased.
This procedure should be read in its entirety before proceeding
with the actual recycling process.
- Phillips head screw driver
- Vacuum approved for toner removal
- Safety goggles and breathing mask
WARNING: Always wear safety goggles and breathing
mask when working with or around toner. Do not disperse the toner
into the air. Use approved toner vacuums and filters at all times.
Approved Vacuums:
Toner approved vacuum. The Atrix HCTV canister type toner vac,
OR the Atrix AAA portable style vacuum.
Some type of approved toner vacuuming system is important because
toner consists of very fine particles that will pass right through
a normal vacuum filter, and blow out the exhaust.
- Black Toner 125g (8158)
- Developer 175g (9158)
- Sealing Strip (SS-Z70)
- Toner cloths (TM-40)
- RTV or Silicon caulk (optional)
- Before proceeding with the following procedure you should have
a work area available with approximately 4 x 3 clear space.
It should be covered with some disposable paper since toner will spill
on this area. It is recommended that brown craft paper be used and
taped to the work area. This will hold the paper in place when trying
to vacuum toner from the paper.
- A garbage can with a strong plastic liner should be adjacent
to the work area to empty used toner. It should be at least 2'
deep to prevent toner from clouding up and over the top of the bag
during disposal.
- Have a few rags available and some disposable paper towels.TM-1
Toner Magnets are perfect for this.
- The work area should be capable of being ventilated, if by accident
toner becomes dispersed into the air. An exhaust fan in one window
is recommended for ventilation.
- If the Circulation of air in the work area room is combined with other
rooms in the building, toner dust may be carried into the other rooms.
A separate and isolated HVAC system is recommended for the work area
room
- Remove the clear cover on the end of the cartridge by removing
the two Phillips head screws. Empty any toner from this clear housing
into the garbage bag, and vacuum clean.
- Remove the large and small size fill plugs under the cover just
removed. These plugs can be difficult to remove, take your time and
carefully work them out. There are no replacements for these plugs.
- Vacuum both areas and the magnetic roller clean.
- Add the new developer into the small hole next to the magnetic
roller. Replace the fill plug.
NOTE: An easy way to add the toner/developer is to construct
a paper funnel from a piece of paper.
- Add the new toner into the large hole using the same paper funnel.
Replace the fill plug.
- Check for leaks around the fill plugs. If there are any, take
a small amount of RTV, or silicon caulk and plug the leak.
- Replace the clear cover and two screws.
- Rotate the magnetic roller backwards so that the roller is clean.
Snap on the sealing strip so that the foam side is against the roller,
and the handle is to the top.
NOTE1: Xerox and Sharp cartridges are NOT interchangeable! The
Xerox cartridges(both the 6R359, and the 6R343) have two alignment
pins on the main body of the cartridge. Each type of Xerox cartridge
also has a differently shaped waste chamber. Both of which are different
from the Sharp cartridge.
NOTE2: If you find that a cartridge is printing too dark, or
too light, there is a factory setting that can be changed. Next to
the small fill hole is a flat piece of metal that is locked around
a keyed shaft. This shaft is from the magnetic roller. By moving the
flat piece of metal up or down, you will cause the magnetic roller
to move in or out. This will give you either darker or lighter print.
(With the magnetic roller out, the print will be darker). This adjustment
is not normally necessary, and is usually only needed when a cartridge
has been recycled many times.
